Generic Control Icons

Image
I wanted to make some generic control icons for games. This would solve the problem of displaying "Press X" on screen. Because if you look at the 3 major controllers, X is in a different place on each. It's the Up Face Button on Nintendo consoles, the Down Face Button on Sony, and the Left Face Button on Microsoft.

Jump So for example, here instead of showing a graphic for A (which is in two different places on the Xbox and Nintendo Controllers) a graphic like the example on the left could be displayed. Obviously you would draw it better to fit in with the theme of the game.

Open Door Again, if you draw the icon as well as everything else in the game, you wouldn't need the rounded rectangle, I'm just making a quick demonstration.

Movement I think Jon Blow had the right idea with this indicator. I would like a way to indicate whether it's left or right. You could probably just put an L or R on the icon, but I was trying to make it non-lettered as much as poss…

Lamp Arm Phone Dock

Image
I've installed several phone docks in my car. All of them were successful to varying degress; but in my tiny Neon the dock often crowds the cabin for either me or my passengers.

This time I had the idea to mount a desk lamp arm to the floor using the seat bolts. I wanted to be able to bend the arm down between the passenger seat and the center console.

I added the dock to the seat by bending a metal bracket and sliding it under the seat mount. The seat still secures tightly.

Ultimately, the depth of the dock made it impossible to stow the arm away between the seat and the center console. However, since the dock can be moved to hover completely over the center console, it is never really in anyone's way. Unfortunately that means the dock is always visible. I'd like to pursue this idea again. Perhaps a slimmer dock could be created?

Just Say No

The following is a comment I posted on a Lifehacker post titled How to Be a Vegetarian and Peacefully Co-Exist at Meal Time.

In social situations, we often respond to people with an excuse. "I can't eat this because I'm vegetarian." Even this great article suggests we say "I already ate before I came here." Which is a totally reasonable suggestion.

My question is, why is "No thank you" never enough? It's true that people ask why, or try to goad you into eating something until you give them a concrete reason.

We do this for a lot of things and I think we should stop. Giving a reason might make you more sociable, but it also takes away your power. Don't want to date a guy? Don't say it's because "I have a boyfriend." Simply say "I'm not interested." If the person has something to say against that then you're not in a safe situation and you should leave.

People look at being vegetarian as a choice that you …

Toothpaste Headlight Restoration

Image
My headlights failed inspection because they were too oxidized and dim. They wanted to charge me $91 for it. Not a totally unfair price to pass inspection for a whole year; but of course, I didn't want to pay.

Following the instructions in the video below, I made a drastic improvement in my headlights which allowed my car to pass inspection. My $700 car is still going strong after 6 years with minimal maintenance and always has functioning heat, AC, and stereo. Everything the body needs.

Just like the guy in the video, I recommend toothpaste with crystals or granules or whatever you want to call them. The little extra abrasive seems to help.

After I was done conditioning the headlights, I sprayed them with WD-40. I do not know if this does anything or why I did it.

Halloween Bags Early

When I'm alone, the blaineallenbrown.com podcasts require quiet a bit of preparation and inspiration. I am still going to be doing those, but at my leisure. In the mean time, Nick and I have been posting Game Performance videos on Halloween Bags Early.

A while ago I registered halloweenbagsearly.com for a laugh as a reference to my favorite podcast The Jeff and Casey Show.

I had been using it for my various projects but never for anything official. When Nick and I decided to make a Game Performance YouTube channel, we knew that was the best name.

We have several videos up already. Check 'em out.

I wrote this essay for class. It could use some more depth (~700 words as per instructions for the assignment) but I liked it so I'm posting it here.
